Defy Ventures partnered with Rippleworks to strengthen the impact of their volunteer network

Defy Ventures is on a mission to shift mindsets to give people with criminal histories their best shot at a second chance. Their vision is to cut the recidivism rate in the U.S. by half by leveraging entrepreneurship as a tool to increase economic opportunity and transform lives. In doing this work, they seek to address the impact of systemic racism in our criminal legal system.

One of Defy’s top priorities going into the project was increasing the impact of their volunteer network. Defy partnered with Rippleworks to create tech solutions for their volunteer program’s current operations and future growth.

Defy Ventures partnered with David Poe, a technology and data expert who brought decades of experience from Fujitech America, United Way, and Upic Solutions. Together they:

• Identified and prioritized their tech challenges without introducing a new system or change

• Analyzed the strategic value of volunteers to Defy’s mission

• Defined success, identified KPIs, and set targets for Defy’s volunteer program

• Clearly defined the role of the volunteer program in Defy’s strategy 

• Developed solutions to Defy’s top tech challenges, created a strategy V1 for their volunteer program, and built a high-level roadmap for when and how to enact changes
